Cooperative Principles
As an electric cooperative, CIPCO is guided by seven cooperative principles.
These are the words we live by.
CIPCO joins a nationwide network of all kinds of cooperatives that adhere to seven cooperative principles. These principles are the guidelines by which we put our values into practice. They differentiate electric cooperatives from other electric utilities by emphasizing honesty, openness, social responsibility and, putting the needs of our Member-owners first.
1. Voluntary & Open Membership
Cooperatives are voluntary organizations open to all persons able to use their services and willing to accept the responsibilities of membership, without gender, social, racial, political or religious discrimination.
2. Democratic Member Control
Cooperatives are democratically controlled by their members, who actively participate in setting policies and making decisions.
3. Members' Economic Participation
Members contribute equally to, and democratically control, the capital of their co-op. Members usually receive limited compensation, if any, on capital subscribed as a condition of members.
4. Autonomy & Independence
Cooperatives are autonomous, self help organizations controlled by their members.
5. Education, Training & Information
Cooperatives provide education and training for their members, elected representatives, managers and employees so they can contribute effectively to the development of their co-op.
6. Cooperation Among Cooperatives
Cooperatives serve their members most effectively and strengthen the co-op movement by working together through local, national, regional and international structures.
7. Concern for Community
While focusing on member needs, co-ops work for the sustainable development of their communities through policies accepted by their members.
