Maquoketa Substation Rebuild Underway
CIPCO substation rebuilds ensure a more dependable service for our members.
As part of CIPCO’s 2024 Substation New-To-Replace-Old (NTRO) Program, CIPCO is removing the 34 kV yard and removing/rebuilding the 161 kV yard at Maquoketa Substation. Originally built in 1962, this rebuild is necessary due to the age and condition of the equipment that has served the Maquoketa Valley Electric Cooperative area for over 60 years. The project includes the demolition and removal of the control buildings, and the retirement of two 161 kV oil breakers, removing 3,000 gallons of oil per breaker.
One key upgrade will be the conversion from a straight bus to a ring bus configuration.
This will enhance the reliability of the transmission supply, providing a stronger, more flexible system for the distribution substations that serve the region.
“We’re rebuilding the 161 kV yard into a more reliable ring bus,” said Dan Dye, CIPCO’s Senior Substation Engineer. “The existing equipment has reached the end of its life, so we’re upgrading to ensure a more dependable service for our members.”
Construction began in July and by August, contractors had completed demolition and laid foundations for new equipment. More recently is the installation of a grounding system and conduit, along with the arrival of several truckloads of steel to begin constructing the substation’s new framework. The project is on track for completion around mid-December 2024.
